Cop who punched deaf e-hailing driver under disciplinary probe, Dewan Rakyat told


KUALA LUMPUR: A disciplinary investigation paper on the person who assaulted a deaf e-hailing driver has been opened by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), says the Home Minister.

Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said disciplinary inquiries were also initiated on the senior investigating officer and investigating officer in the case.

This followed Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department procedure, he said in a parliamentary written reply to RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong), who wanted to know what action had been taken against the individual.

L/Kpl Muhammad Taufik Ismail, a police escort for the Tunku Mahkota of Johor at the time of the incident, was fined RM1,000 on Nov 4 by a Magistrate's Court here for causing harm to disabled e-hailing driver Ong Ing Keong.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to one year in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both if convicted.

According to the facts of the case, Ong was picking up a passenger at a Kuala Lumpur hotel lobby on May 28.

The accused was told to leave the area by several men. However, he did not understand owing to his disability.

Ong then rolled down his window to ask in sign language and he was suddenly punched in the face by L/Kpl Taufik.

He left the place to drop off his passenger and lodged a police report.

A medical report stated that the victim suffered swelling on the right side of his face.

The case has received widespread attention from the public.
